What are the benefits of volunteering at the Science Museum of Virginia?
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
The minimum age to volunteers is 14. Each volunteer position has a different age requirement; please see our student volunteer opportunities to learn more.
For children under 14, we offer a family volunteer program. A parent, guardian or mentor must be willing to volunteer alongside the under-14 volunteer at all times. This adult must fill out an application, go through all training and be a fully active volunteer alongside the child. Please contact our volunteer office for more information about this opportunity.
Is there a required time commitment?
Yes. Our volunteer positions require a consistent schedule with a minimum of two 4-hour shifts per month for at least four months, with the exception of Special Events or Camp In Volunteers. Some positions require a longer commitment.
Is there a volunteer uniform?
Yes. Science Museum of Virginia volunteers are required to wear khaki or light brown colored pants, a Museum-provided blue volunteer t-shirt or black volunteer smock, closed toe shoes and a name badge.
What kind of training will there be?
Training is an essential part of being a volunteer at the Science Museum of Virginia. All volunteers are required to complete Exploration Training - this training is an opportunity to discover everything going on at the Museum (which is a lot!). Once Exploration Training is completed, volunteers will begin job-specific training on their first scheduled day.
What about absences?
If you are going to be absent it is your responsibility to contact us as soon as possible. We understand that there will be illnesses, trips, exams to study for, etc. but we expect you to treat your volunteer commitment seriously and let us know if you will be out.
Do any of the positions pay?
Our volunteer positions are unpaid. To see Museum paid jobs listings please visit the Virginia Jobs Website.
Do you offer internships?
Yes. Please check out our internships page to learn more about interning at the Science Museum of Virginia.
Do I have to have a background check?
Yes. If you are over 18, you will be required to pass a background check. The Museum will conduct the check and pay the fee.
How do I apply?
Review our volunteer opportunities and fill out the online application. If you are under 18, please fill out the student application. If you are over 18, please fill out the adult application. You will receive an email acknowledging receipt of your application. We will review your application and be in touch if your qualifications meet the needs of our available volunteer opportunities.
