Seafood Surgery (PDF 320 kB): In this activity for elementary school students, the students become "surgeons". They examine "patients" and take a look at the patients' "x-rays". They scrub up, put on masks, surgical gowns and gloves, and operate on their patients: a crayfish and a perch.
Earth In Space: This module of instructional materials serves to support the first- through sixth-grade teacher in the classroom, covering every component of Earth in space, space science, and astronomy-related standards in the Virginia Science Standards of Learning and related Teacher Resource Guide.
Physical Science SOLutions (Grades K-6) (PDF 227 kB): These activities were developed by the Science Museum of Virginia over many years to encourage hands-on science in the classroom. The activities have been classroom-tested by teachers and museum educators. They do not assume any prior knowledge of physical science - the appropriate science background is provided for every activity. Many activities also include extension and assessment components. Science Museum activities are developed to support the 1995 Virginia Standards of Learning (S.O.L.s). The S.O.L.s covered are listed at the beginning of each activity.
Museum Learning Links: Offer teachers and students a well-planned museum visit that includes hands-on learning and classroom activities to reinforce the museum experience. Materials are available for K–2, 3–4, 5–6, Middle School and High School grade levels. Please note: The science museum Web Team is currently "overhauling" the Museum Learning Links site.
