Beach Science: It’s a Shore Thing!

Neptune points the way to our newest summer exhibition!  When people refer to “the beach,” they are usually describing a sandy destination. You probably have a favorite beach activity – swimming, reading, building sandcastles, playing volley ball. But beaches are so much more than just sunny spots for relaxation and play. They are dynamic ecosystems linking land, ocean and air. Check out our newly installed sand dune. Get ready to dig for treasure in our outdoor sand boxes.

Stroll along the boardwalk and learn facts about the beach. Giggle at the revealing history of swimsuits – we bet you thought the bikini was invented by Gidget in 1959 – and uncover new  activities for the entire family to enjoy at the beach.

Have the ULTIMATE SUMMER check out The Ultimate Wave Tahiti and Deep Sea in the IMAX®DOME.

National Geographic’s MAPS: Tools for Adventure!
Now open!
Maps help us find our way, share information, reveal patterns, and solve problems.  The world’s most recognized map experts at the National Geographic Society and the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis joined forces to develop an extraordinary learning experience that’s fun and educational for all ages. Families and students manipulate and study amazing historical and contemporary maps to forge their own adventures.

In our newest visiting exhibit, guests can:
• Chart their past, present and future explorations on Earth by placing symbols on a large world map.
• Create a map of their neighborhood in Make It, Map It.
• Build pyramids from the ground up at the Pyramids of Giza tabletop activity.
• Pilot a robot through the shafts of a pyramid.
• Play together in a life-size Congo Trek Tent.
• Track elephants and search the jungle for safe places for elephants to live.
• Drive a rover on the surface of Mars.
• Find shipwreck artifacts and treasure buried on the floor of the ocean.
Teachers – ask about our special MAPS lab for your students!
