Preventative cancer screenings play a vital role in reducing the occurrence and mortality rates associated with this challenging disease. In this enlightening discussion, Dr. Robert Winn, Director of VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, will explain the fundamental biological processes of cancer formation, the current initiatives that aim to improve cancer identification and the development of novel screening technologies that are expected to bring about further progress in cancer screening in the future.

As a pulmonologist, Dr. Winn is deeply committed to community-engaged research focused on eliminating health disparities. He is leading the nation in establishing a 21st-century equity model for cancer science and care. Dr. Winn is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the National Cancer Institute Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities CURE Program Lifetime Achievement Award; the AACR-Minorities in Cancer Research Jane Cooke Wright Lectureship; the AACI Cancer Health Equity Award; and the Prevent Cancer Foundation Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Laurel Award for Increasing Health Equity.

Registration Information

Sunrise Science begins at 8 a.m. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. so you can grab a complimentary cup of coffee to enjoy during the talk. Each presentation includes time for audience questions at the end. The event will conclude by 9 a.m. so you can continue on with your day, but with a little extra science to fill your cup of knowledge!

Sunrise Science events are free. Tickets are capped due to fixed seating in The Dome. All guests, including members, should make a reservation on the Science Museum’s website prior to the event. Tickets will only be available at the door if the event is not sold out.

Science Museum exhibitions are not open during Sunrise Science events.
